Federal Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

If you expect your income this year to be less than last year and you don’t want to pay more taxes than you think you will owe at year end, you can choose to pay 90 percent of your estimated current year tax bill. If the total of your estimated payments and withholding add up to less than 90 percent of what you owe, you may face an underpayment penalty.

If you don’t pay enough tax through withholding and estimated tax payments, you may be charged a penalty. You also may be charged a penalty if your estimated tax payments are late, even if you are due a refund when you file your tax return. If you didn’t owe taxes last year, you aren’t required to make estimated tax payments. Do I have to pay estimated taxes for 2021?

You won’t owe an estimated tax penalty if the tax shown on your 2021 return, minus your 2021 withholding, is less than $1,000. If you’re a calendar year taxpayer and you file your 2021 Form 1040 by March 1, 2022, you don’t need to make an estimated tax payment if you pay all the tax you owe at that time.
