You may change methods as often as you like, as long as all benefits provided in a calendar year are treated as paid no later than December 31 of the calendar year. So if you live in one of those two states, then you’ll pay the state’s regular income tax rates on all of your taxable benefits (that is, up to 85% of your benefits). If your combined income is more than $34,000, you will pay taxes on up to 85% of your Social Security benefits. This can be a significant tax cut for people earning more than the wage base. The tax rate for an employee’s portion of the Social Security tax is 6.2%, so that’s a pretty good savings for higher-income workers.

If you and your spouse jointly own and operate a business and share in the profits and losses, you may be partners in a partnership, whether or not you have a formal partnership agreement. The partnership is considered the employer of any employees, and is liable for any employment taxes due on wages paid to its employees. Generally, you can take a credit against your FUTA tax for amounts you paid into U.S. The credit may be as much as 5.4% of wages subject to FUTA tax.

Things get more complex if you’re paying taxes on 85% of your benefits. However, the IRS helps taxpayers by offering software and a worksheet to calculate Social Security tax liability. If your Social Security income is taxable, the amount you pay will depend on your total combined retirement income. However, you’ll never pay taxes on more than 85% of your Social Security income, though the income brackets will vary by filing status.
